The housing crunch is so bad in Silicon Valley that Nicole Jones, a single 29-year-old with a toddler and another baby on the way, paid $1,000 a month to live in a single-car garage in San Mateo. And she felt lucky. CNN highlighted her story recently in the  child poverty installment  of its  Change the List project , a series focused on trying to help places rise from the bottom of various misery lists ( worst rape rate ,  most endangered river ,  most unequal place ). Click image for slideshow. Jones was raising her little girl — 18 months old when CNN visited — in a converted garage space with a tiny bathroom, including "a stand-up shower that's way too small." The Daily Mail  estimated  its size at 250 square feet, but it looks like it may be even smaller. "My living room, kitchen, bedroom, dining room — this is everything," she told CNN. You’ve run out of boxes twice, full rolls of packing tape are a distant memory, and every drawer in your home feels like a vortex of packing misery. In between frantically dragging your unwanted gear to the curb and trying to use socks as precious-items packing material, you realize you’ll never get all this stuff out of here in time on your own. San Francisco, the Rorschach Test:

Image
Josh Haner/The New York Times   San Francisco looms large in the imagination of outsiders, who use it as a touchstone to define other places. Above, the city and Marin County, as seen from the Airship Ventures zeppelin. In 1898, in a book called “Skaguay, The Gateway to the Klondike,” promoting the golden promise of Alaska,  a civic booster wrote : The future of Skaguay is assured: she is the San Francisco of Alaska — the Key City of the great golden Northwest and will be the capital and the metropolis of the coming North Star State. It could not have been the first time that the name San Francisco has been the touchstone, the benchmark, the defining frame for someplace else. As in “ Geneva  is the San Francisco of Switzerland.” Or “ Port au Prince  is the San Francisco of the Caribbean.” Or “ Brighton  is the San Francisco of England.” As demonstrated by the pages and pages of links that appear with a Google search of the phrase “is the San Francisco...
