If there’s one person who’s really enjoying his personal fortune, it’s Jeff Vinik. And if there’s another person who’s having just as much fun, it’s the unidentified buyer who just bought Vinik’s home in Weston, MA.
Vinik, the owner of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, put his 19,306-square-foot manse up for sale in October 2013 for $17 million. About a year and a half later, Vinik has found a buyer at a reduced price of $10.3 million. Kathryn Richlen and Paige Yates of Coldwell Banker represented Vinik in the home’s sale.
We covered Vinik’s mansion when it first hit the market, and we noted the playful nature of the house. You can’t help but notice:
  • The staircase that looks as if it belongs in an amusement park
  • A living room decked out in a joker color palette, with clear, decorative pillars in the entryway
  • The Scrabble wall tile in one of the bathrooms
  • A video game room designed as a cockpit for a spaceship
  • The tube slide to descend from one floor to another
  • The futuristic wine cellar
  • A theater that seats 16 people
  • The sitting room with a bookshelf adorned with tubes filled with large colored balls
One of the reasons Vinik decided to sell the property was because he wanted to be closer to his hockey team, according to Busted Coverage. He’s also become a mover and shaker in Tampa Bay business circles. According to the Boston Globe, Vinik owns 30 acres around Amalie Arena (the home ice of the Lightning), and he wants to revitalize the area with a decadelong plan to build retail space, an entertainment complex, corporate offices, residences, and a medical school.
Vinik started out in business as the manager of the Fidelity Magellan Fund from 1992 to 1996. He left Fidelity to start the Vinik Asset Management hedge fund. In addition to the Lightning, Vinik also owns the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League and has a minority stake in MLB’s Boston Red Sox. He also serves on the board or directors for the Liverpool Football Club of the English Premier League.
