Should you feed professional movers?

Image
It can surprise people how many questions there are surrounding the moving process. At first glance, it seems so very simple. You figure out the date you need to be out of the house, then discern when you’ll be allowed to move into your new home. You pack your stuff, call a moving company, and then go where you need to go. Not so fast. Here’s one piece of minutiae you may not have thought of right off the bat: should you feed your movers? There’s not really a short answer to this question, since so much depends on both the situation and your own personal preference. A Cold Drink is a Good Thing Here’s one thing we would recommend though, no matter what the situation. Make sure to provide the movers with something to drink: water, soda, or sports drinks, it doesn’t really matter. But giving them something refreshing will help the move go quicker, as well as making them appreciative. You can skip out on doing this of course. Unless you signed a very odd contract, ever...

Spending Money Intelligently:

1 Spend money on absolute essentials first.  When it comes to spending money, there are some things that you absolutely, positively cannot do without. These things (namely, food, water, housing, and clothing) are your first priority when it comes to spending your cash. Obviously, if you become homeless or suffer from starvation, it becomes very, very difficult to meet the rest of your financial goals, so you'll want to ensure that you have enough money to cover these bare minimum requirements before devoting money to anything else. However, just because things like food, water, and shelter are important doesn't necessarily mean that you have to splurge on them. For instance, cutting down on the amount that you go out to eat is one easy way to drastically reduce your food expenses. Along the same lines, moving to an area with cheap rent or home prices is a great way to spend less on housing. Depending on where you live, housing costs can eat up a large chunk of your inco...

How to Reward Friends Who Help You Move (Pizza and Beer Won’t Cut It)

Image
Found a new place?  Check.  Packed up all your stuff?  Check.  Suckered friends into helping you move?  Check. But wait—you’re not done! You still need to figure out how you’ll pay your friends back after the exhausting big day. No, a few slices of pizza and room-temperature beer won’t cut it anymore. You’re grown-up now, remember? To ensure that your friends remain, well,  friends,  there are two cardinal rules to keep in mind before the move: 1. Make the whole process as efficient and hassle-free as possible.  It probably won’t be fun, but it doesn’t have to be backbreaking or traumatic either. 2. Make your gratitude clear.  You don’t need to change your will or buy your pals Mini Coopers, but do make them feel good about participating. So go ahead and get started! You’ll still have a few friends left after the move. We promise. Before you move Don’t:  Fold boxes closed to save tape. Your buds will be stuck balancing fra...
